Mater Mothers' Hospitals

Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Hospitals are renowned as leaders in the provision of high quality maternity services, providing care and support for women and their families in one collocated facility.

Since its beginnings almost 50 years ago, Mater Mothers’ Hospitals have been the birthplace for over 300 000 babies.

Mater Mothers’ Hospitals provide life-saving care for seriously ill or premature newborn babies through the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU). Each year approximately 2000 infants use this specialised service, making it one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The NCCU has 79 permanent cot spaces, providing 24 hour care for babies born as early as 24 weeks gestation and sometimes weighing as little as 400 grams.

Last year, thanks to the money raised through the House for Life, the NCCU launched a new paperless, clinical information system called BadgetNet. The use of the system is an Australian-first, and has assisted the doctors, nurses and other health specialists to provide the highest quality care possible.
